DeYoung (reconciliation studies, Bethel Univ.) has revised and expanded his 1995 book, Coming Together. His new theological reflections stress the unity of believers around the ideals of Christianity while acknowledging the mixed messages of both Scripture and tradition around difference, diversity, and disability. The strength of DeYoung's book lies in his reliance on examples from Scripture, but the whole work, given the title and premise, might have benefited from looking outside American issues of diversity toward investigations of economic, ethnic, and racial diversity worldwide. Verdict An intriguing but incomplete look at the situation of Christian theology and practice in the contemporary setting; a place to begin for church groups and students of religion.-Graham Christian, formerly of Andover-Harvard Theological Lib., Cambridge, MA Copyright 2009 Media Source Inc.
