Gr 4-8 The static nature of these narratives is more pronounced in the first story than in the second. In Water Puppets, a 13-year-old Vietnamese boy describes his family's struggles in the late '60s to cope with the ravages of war. While the author is admirably neutral about the combatants, the dryness of his presentation diminishes the excitement of the narrative as Xuan, his mother, and his sister move from a rural farming area to the streets of Saigon.
