Levenson (Money for Nothing), who teaches science writing at MIT, recounts the history of germ theory in this work. He starts with Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch draper who, in 1676, constructed his own microscopes and thence discovered a previously unknown world of living organisms.
