In certain circles, French underground director Rollin (1938–2010) is a legend. True to the spirit of le Fantastique, the French genre that fuses sf, horror, and fantasy, these titles are not terror films, but, instead, Rollin strives to present his surrealist visions as poetic and melancholy works of art. In The Nude Vampire (1970), a wealthy playboy learns that his scientist father is seeking the key to immortality. His work leads him to a secret cult that is conducting experiments on a captive vampire. While the compelling images that are Rollin's trademark are less in evidence here than in later works, this Dadaist blend of horror and erotica earned him a reputation as a maestro of the macabre.
