Previous editions of this reference for "the community at large" appeared in 1984 and 1994 (LJ 6/1/94), followed by a one-volume condensation (LJ 5/15/96). Editors Craighead and Nemeroff indicate that two-thirds of the prior edition has been updated and one-third replaced. Unfortunately, this seems exaggerated, and there are other editorial problems: biographical entries vary greatly in length, with mere paragraphs devoted to many of the more famous (such as William James or G.H.
