Many gamers dream of developing their own Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (see Computer Media, LJ 4/1/04), and these how-to guides just might do the trick. A textbook for students and aspiring designers, the full-color Game Development Essentials introduces the steps in the development process, covering game history and types, the elements in creating a compelling game, and the steps in the development cycle; it is not a how-to programming guide per se. Biographies and quotes from established designers add a nice touch; appropriate for larger libraries. Game Design Workshop also focuses on the design process rather than on programming; extensive exercises (none of which require programming knowledge) aid in self-study, while sidebars bring in advice from various designers.
