Although Meriwether Lewis's giant dog, Seaman, is mentioned only twenty-eight times in the collective journals from the Corps of Discovery ("the writingest explorers of all time"), he merits two books of his own to mark the two-hundred-year anniversary of the expedition. Myers allows Seaman to narrate his own tale, with the dog emphasizing a bond with Lewis almost as strong as that between wizard and familiar. Seaman describes seven dramatic incidents mentioned in the journals, including hunting squirrels in a river, being kidnapped by Indians, and having a beaver sever an artery.
