Brown's original nursery rhyme was first published in 1952 in a small, child-sized format with tender Barbara Cooney illustrations in black and white with splashes of red. This newly illustrated version is by contrast bigger and glossier, with two full-color paintings for each stanza, complex pictures that tell an underlying story. Each stanza asks a question, beginning with this one: "Little Old Cat / Little Old Cat / Where have you been? / To see this and that / Said the Little Old Cat / That's where I've been."
