McKay inhabits absolutely the head and heart of a young child in presenting her tale of Bella, who at age three learns all about Christmas: "Christmas is when it snows and Santa Claus comes on a sleigh pulled by reindeer. He has a huge brown sack full of presents for children" and for her cat, Black Jack, as well. Such a firm grasp of the essentials. But then Bella's preschool puts on a holiday pageant, and Santa comes—with a sack full of presents for the children, all right, but without reindeer, a sleigh, snow, or a present for Black Jack.
