Gr 2-4 In this retelling of an ancient English folk tale, the fair Burd Ellen runs "widdershins around the church," and is stolen away by the King of Elfland. Her brothers go to the Wizard Merlin to discover how they may save her, but only Childe Roland is able to do what must be done--cut off the heads of everyone to whom he speaks on his journey and avoid food and drink while in the fairy kingdom.
