Animals in food production are the focus of filmmaker Papola's At the Fork, which examines how farm animals are raised for human consumption. Along with his vegetarian wife, Lisa, he visits pig, cattle, and chicken farms for a sometimes disturbing but very informative tour. Since most large-scale farms declined participation and permission for the filmmakers to shoot footage, Papola was able to locate farmers who had incorporated more humane methods into their companies. In addition to meat production, egg harvesting employs the highest level of animal cruelty (chickens spend their entire lives in a tiny cage), and these heinous activities are compared with those of farmers who allow their chickens to move about, perch, and even go outdoors.
